Project Updates
New Hike and Bike Trail
We are very excited to report that our 2007 John McCutcheon Concert to Benefit White Rock Lake successfully raised the funds needed to begin the reconstruction of the dilapidated hike and bike trail on East Lawther between Poppy Drive and Dixon Branch, adjacent to The Celebration Tree Grove.
The engineering firm of Carter and Burgess will be completing the construction drawings soon and we hope to have some dirt flying before the end of the year!
The Celebration Tree Grove Projects:
Meandering Trail
Due to heavy rains that cascade from the woods through The Celebration Tree Grove, the meandering crushed granite trail near the plaza has had some areas wash out. We’re working on fixing this problem with the addition of a berm, a swale, a dry creek bed, and some large boulders.
New Bridge
A small stone bridge reminiscent of the bridge built by the CCC near the Stone Tables pavilion will be built over the new creek bed on the meandering trail. Thanks to the Harry W. Bass, Jr. Foundation for their generous gift to make this little bridge possible.
New Plaques in the Plaza
We continue to add new bronze plaques on the monuments in The Celebration Tree Grove plaza. Stop by when you get a chance and see all the new names of lake lovers, past and present, that are honored, remembered, and celebrated in the Grove.
New Trees Around Winfrey Point
The Celebration Tree Grove is expanding! As promised, reforestation throughout White Rock Lake Park will continue to happen. On November 17, 2007, 168 new trees will be planted by volunteers around Winfrey Point. We can hardly wait to welcome them to their new home!
West Lawther Construction:
Although this is a City of Dallas Park and Recreation Department project and FTLOTL is not involved in any phase of it, a number of folks have contacted us for “the scoop”. We got the definitive scoop from Bruce Felps, Editor of Lakewood-Now.net. You can link here to read the article, “Inconvenience Should Lead to Improvement“, by Bruce Felps on the lakewood-now.net web site and see the photos and maps of the project.
